HOW THE WORLD USES THE INTERNET

As of December 2018, there are over 4.1 billion internet users worldwide! Since its invention in the 1990’s the internet has gone from strength to strength, providing users with a wealth of opportunities, such as email; access to online news; banking; product information; social media; software downloads; and online purchases. The result, a world that is internet-obsessed, but what exactly are we using the internet for across the world?

 

We live in a world where interacting online happens daily. PostBeyond has analysed OECD countries to reveal the most popular uses for the internet in each country.

 

The data revealed that 21 out of the 39 countries analysed ranked email as their most popular use of the internet. Countries Poland and Finland favoured the communication platform the most with 96.3% and 96%.

 

The UK uses their internet time to download software more than any other country. Whilst Greece (94%) and Australia (81%), on the other hand, allow more time for getting to grips with their finances, as their number one internet use is revealed as banking.

 

Online purchases are driving transformation and technology developments in eCommerce. Since 2000 internet sales have grown rapidly increased and with PostBeyonds research showing that the UK (87.2%) claiming its use of the internet as its most popular and Sweden (83.5%) and France (75.1%) in the check out shortly after them, there are no signs of eCommerce slowing down.

 

Online sales, was revealed as the least popular online activity amongst the countries, with the Netherlands revealed as spending a third of their time selling products online.

 

Colombia had the highest results for news consumption (90%) and also the came out on top of any other country for job searching online, with 36.6%. Whereas the population of Denmark spends just over 6% of their time hunting for jobs online.

 

Whether your hunting for a new job, purchasing a new outfit or simply paying bills the internet is helping the world in some form, no wonder we can’t put our devices down.
